The Refugee Sponsorship of the Greater Montreal's response

The Refugee Sponsorship of the Greater Montreal welcomes the minister’s temporary measures to accelerate the processing of sponsorship applications for Syrian refugees; the accelerated resettlement targets and the assignment of more staff to deal with the crisis. But we would like clarification on the intended split between privately sponsored refugees and government assisted refugees.

The appointment of a senior official as a special coordinator for Syrian refugees is another welcome step that we hope will expedite the resettlement process. We look forward to working with the government in resolving other impediments such as the need for expedited family reunification and hope that vulnerable refugees from all religious and ethnic groups are prioritized for resettlement to Canada.

We eagerly anticipate working with the coordinator in order to respond more quickly and effectively to the current crisis.

Government announcement

The Refugee Sponsorship of the Greater Montreal welcomes the Government of Canada’s latest response to the overwhelming demand by the people of Canada that it do more to help Syrian refugees.

It is hoped the changes announced Saturday, September 19, by Minister Chris Alexander will expedite the arrival and resettlement of Syrian refugees in Canada and will foster a greater engagement by Canadians in this effort.

Considering all Syrians outside their country as de facto refugees regardless of certification by the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees is a step in the right direction. This should open the door to allow Groups of Two to Five and Community Sponsors to step forward to assist refugees.

Still, a crucial element that remains to be clarified is whether Canadian visa officers will now begin referring Syrian refugee cases to these groups so that they can be matched with the many eager sponsors who are stepping forward to help.
